Week Ending: July 5, 2013

“This Week in CyanogenMod” is an ongoing feature that aims to serve as a one-stop shop for weekly updates. Topics discussed are culled from our social media accounts, gerrit, status updates and general thoughts.

Happy day after the 4th of July, or what the rest of the world calls it, Friday.

Security Features

Steve (cyanogen) and Koush (koush) had a video interview with Geek.com’s Russell Holly, discussing the new security features coming to CyanogenMod.

Secure Messaging

During that interview, koush outlined some of the exciting behind-the-scenes happenings with the Secure Messaging protocol he is working on. Some highlights include:

  • A Market version of the messaging app so non-CM users can use the secure messaging
  • An iOS version of the application so your friends not using Android can get in on the fun
  • A partnership with Moxie, the man behind TextSecure, RedPhone and Open Whisper Systems

Privacy Manager

With the help of Lars Greiss of SlimRoms we introduced an easier method to control and manage your Privacy Guard enabled applications with the new Privacy Guard Manager. Privacy Guard and this new UI are available in the latest nightly builds.

General Usage Features

This week we added the ability to optionally hide lock-screen music controls and an option to allow a subtle vibration if you receive a notification while on a phone call (replacing the “Vibrate during call” option in the Messaging app). Sometimes, its the small things that count.

Bug Fix Releases

A few devices have received a 10.1.0.x release to signify bug-fix patches. We will continue to release bug-fixes on top of the 10.1.0 general release as needed, on a device by device basis. Samsung Galaxy S 3 users on Verizon were no strangers to these bug-fixes, and we are looking into reports of funky audio via headsets on the device as well.

The New Get.cm

As mentioned in last week’s round-up, the venerable get.cm download portal received a face-lift, and we are trialing the new design over at beta.get.cm. Give it a spin and let us know what you think.

International Love

The German Android User magazine published their August 2013 edition, featuring a spotlight on CyanogenMod and our team. One of the articles was written by our very own mad-murdock, and can be read online for free (non-German speakers should use a translation tool).

Got a suggestion for a topic you’d like to see in the next round-up? Let us know in the comments below. All device/port requests will be ignored.
